What is the female condom?

What is the female condom?

The female condom is very similar in intent to the male condom in that it is a contraceptive device designed to prevent pregnancy and it also safeguards against the transmission of STIs – Sexually Transmitted Infections.

What does the female condom look like?

It is essentially a pouch with a ring at either end, the inner ring is inserted into the vagina and the second ring sits outside the body, designed to keep the condom in place and also to facilitate easy removal.  The female condom is usually made of synthetic latex, safe for those with a latex allergy as this is usually as a result of contact with natural rubber latex.  It comes already lubricated.

And the point of the female condom is…?

The female condom has all the advantages of the male condom plus a couple of unique features all of its own.

The female condom offers the usual contraceptive and disease prevention benefits but it can also be inserted up to eight hours before sexual intercourse, ideal for those who find the traditional male condom a bit of a passion killer. Because it is made from synthetic latex unlike the standard male condom, it is safe to use for those who have a sensitivity or allergy to ordinary latex.  It also doesn’t require an erect penis or even the cooperation of the man himself so it puts the woman firmly in charge of proceedings when it comes to safe sex which is why so mgany women prefer them.

Which is safer, the male or the female condom?

The female condom is not as safe statistically as the male version but don’t make the mistake of thinking you are being super sensible and use both a male and a female condom at the same time.  They can actually stick together which may cause either one or both of them to break. What does a female condom feel like?

Guys report that the female condom feels good.  It warms to body temperature and the external ring can act as a stimulus on the clitoris whilst the internal ring can have the same impact on the top of the penis.  The female condom is clearly and deliberately much wider than a male condom and some men prefer this.  The female condom is also perfectly safe to use with both water and silicone-based lubricants.

Being in control

Some women like the fact that using a female condom puts them in the driving seat when it comes to pregnancy prevention and sex that is safe from STIs.  This is without the necessity to be on the contraceptive pill either – the female condom offers control and is not permanent.  It does however not have the success rates and protection of other forms of contraception including both the male condom and the pill.

Are they easy to use?

It’s one of those situations where practice makes perfect and because you can insert them several hours before you expect to have intercourse, you have the time and the opportunity to make sure you get it right.  Not having to stop proceedings in the heat of the moment is also another big attraction!
